Want to know the secret to longevity? That’s exactly what Harvard researchers set out to do when they conducted a massive retrospective study following the lifestyle habits of thousands of people. What they discovered isn’t surprising, that living “healthy” can help you live longer.
So what exactly is a healthy lifestyle? We’re glad you asked! Here’s a closer look at the top 5 healthy habits as defined by Harvard researchers.
- A healthy diet
A healthy diet includes a high intake of vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole grains, healthy fats and omega-3 fatty acids, along with a low intake of red meats, processed meats, sugar-sweetened beverages, trans fats and sodium.
- Physical activity
A “healthy” amount of physical activity is defined as 30 minutes per day of moderate to vigorous activity.
- Normal body weight
Having a normal range of body mass index (BMI) between 18.5 and 24.9 is the criteria for a healthy body weight.
-
No smoking
There’s no such thing a healthy amount of smoking. Never having smoked is the healthy habit here.
- Moderate alcohol intake
Moderate alcohol consumption means up to one drink per day for women, and two drinks daily for men. One drink contains about 14 grams of alcohol, the equivalent of 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of distilled spirits.
Among the study participants, the more healthy habits a person had, the longer their lifespan was. People who met all criteria for a healthy lifestyle enjoyed “significantly, impressively longer lives” than those who had none, according to the study.
