What Causes Sudden Dark Patches on Your Skin?

Posted by Kim Beels on

Your skin has color-making cells that often work overtime, resulting in unsightly brown or gray patches. These discolored patches are known as melasma, and they occur more often in women, particularly those who are pregnant. Hence its nickname, “the mask of pregnancy.”

Melasma is triggered by the sun (no surprise there!) and other things like hormonal changes, birth control pills, and sometimes, skin care products. Annoyingly, it can appear almost anywhere on your face — including the cheeks, forehead, bridge of the nose, above the upper lip, and chin — and on your neck and décolletage.

Using a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or greater with both UVA and UVB protection (or ‘broad spectrum’ protection) every day is the best way to prevent and even reverse the appearance of melasma. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends seeking out the shade, wearing protective clothing, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed sun hat, coupled with sunscreen, as the best melasma preventative.

Environ’s Scientifically And Clinically Researched Products

Intense C-Boost Mela-Even Cream

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant, a compound critical for healthy-looking skin. The scientifically researched ingredients in Mela-Even Cream help reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation by slowing the effects of melanin production, reducing the appearance of melasma and preventing the look of new brown spots from appearing. use twice daily to help keep the look of melasma at bay, reveal the look of more even tone, and plump fine lines and wrinkles.

RAD Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen

Your best defense against the appearance of melasma caused by sun damage is always a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30. Environ’s RAD Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen, for face and body, is formulated with a combination of physical sunscreens as well as a unique phyto-complex to work synergistically in protecting the skin form the effects of harsh damaging environmental influences and the sun. Unlike many physical sunscreens, it has a light, creamy texture, so it absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave a greasy after-feel.
