Exercise smarter, not harder

The experts recommend walking 10,000 steps a day, but don’t sweat it if you don’t. Even short bursts of activity count. 15 minutes of jogging is equivalent to 30 minutes of brisk walking. The key is getting your heart rate up for at least 10 minutes. Another exercise shortcut that offers big rewards is high-intensity workouts—30-second exercises like jumping jacks, push-ups, or squats with 10 seconds of rest between the set. It helps build muscle as well as improve heart and lung health.

Stand more often

You don’t have to run a marathon or spend hours at the gym to reap the health benefits of exercise. A simple stroll on your lunch break can provide a much-needed respite from daily stressors. Another benefit of walking is spending time outside, a proven mood booster and stress reducer. And if you can’t take a stroll, try standing more often throughout the day. Numerous studies suggest that sitting for long periods of time is one of the worst things you can do for your health. Luckily, the solution—standing—doesn’t require a gym membership or expensive equipment! For most of us, standing is one of the simplest and easiest health habits ever!

Stop counting calories

Focus on eating nutrient-rich foods like protein, whole grains, and fruits and veggies. Research shows that people who consume low carb diets lose two to three times more weight than people who just lowered caloric intake. Another dietary shortcut is avoiding empty calories, like soda, chips and cookies.

Grab a bag of dental picks for your purse.

If you skip flossing before bed because you hate it or you’re simply too tired, try flossing after lunch with a pre-threaded flosser or dental pick.
