Our New Year’s Resolution: Find More Joy!
Posted by Jen Conroy on
As 2018 approaches, we bet you’re busy thinking about New Year’s resolutions. Do you want to exercise more or eat better? Keeping your body healthy is always a great idea—just be sure not to forget your mood! Like your heart, your mood is an important health muscle, and it needs to be flexed to achieve your best health inside and out.
Psychologists have long known that happy people tend to live longer. If you’re in need of a New Year’s pick-me-up, here are three simple mood-boosters:
Connect.
According to an 80-year Harvard study, the longest study ever conducted on happiness, the key to healthy aging and longevity is feeling good about your relationships. So call an old friend and start giving your honey more hugs and kisses, because your life could depend on it!
Remember the good.
Believe it or not, reflecting on the positive parts of your day is an actual brain exercise used by positive psychologists. You can increase your sense of well-being big time by reflecting on 3 things that went well during the day and replaying them in your mind.
Try something new.
Whether you’re learning to knit or play guitar, approaching a new goal triggers the reward center in your brain by releasing dopamine, a happy chemical. It doesn’t matter how good you are, either. Your brain will reward you every small step along the way as you learn. As the old saying goes, it’s all about the journey, not the destination.
